day 4: hemmed in

I'm regretting a day job that makes my photography only happen at night in our tiny apartment. Planning to be more adventurous this Spring after final exams finish.
This was just an experiment with the K10d's wireless flash trigger function, which quickly identified a dilemma: how do you open the apeture wide enough for low DOF while not over exposing? The camera limits the on-body flash (necessary to trigger remote slave) to 1/180s, and the flash can only be turned down to -3.0E. The answer is not "Pocket Wizards," because there's no money for that.

  1. Seth, I like how you're finding some really creative views of everyday things. Great work!

Some things for preventing overexposure when using the flash and wide apertures:

    - maximize shutter speed (your camera probably can't synch the flash much over 1/200 unless you have both mechanical AND electric shutter) Remember, though, that this only drops the ambient light and does not change the flash exposure!
    - drop the ISO on the camera as low as possible
    - bounce the flash off something
    - shoot the flash through something
    - ND filter on the lens
    - ND filter on the flash

  2. Excellent suggestions -- particularly to bounce the flash off of something else: that sounds inexpensive!
